I feel determined to make this Zaption thing work! I've been emailing a woman named Fiona in their Help Center. Here are the last two emails from her:

Hi Judy,

Thank you for the extra information! Our developers looked into this and it seems to be a problem with Internet Explorer 9. The current version of this browser is Internet Explorer 11. Are you able to update the browser? Our developers will try to fix this issue on IE, but a browser upgrade may be an immediate fix.

I'll keep you posted :)

Thanks! Fiona

Hi Judy,

I just wanted to let you know that the issues associated with the IE9 browser should be resolved. Please let me know if you are still seeing unexpected behavior or have any other questions - I'm happy to help :)

Thank you again for your patience! Fiona

I think the lesson here is to ask for help if you need it!!

Believe it or not, there are people growing rice locally. I read about it in an article from The Recorder this October. There's a website to check out as well. As we think about our Big Question (How can knowledge of genetics help feed the world?) and our Big Challenge (advising the Rice for a Better World Institute about developing a rice plant that can produce more rice and rice that is more nutritious), maybe we can investigate how local farmers are choosing varieties of rice, what techniques they use to grow rice in our climate and how scientists can use information from local farmers.

Homework:

  1. Read the article and bring in the name of one variety of rice. (p.s. The Recorder allows you to view one article per day without a subscription- if you cannot view it I have a copy in class you can look over.)

  2. Visit the website and tell me the name and location of the local farm learning about rice production.
